Politics and the Church – The Church v. the Angel of Light [Part 7]

This week we will start to address a subject that one might wonder why I am addressing, considering my subject is ‘politics’ and the ‘Church’?  Why are guns even in the mix?  Isn’t that strictly a political subject?  Well, actually the ability of citizens to protect themselves with guns or whatever is addressed in the Bible.  While guns had not been invented during Biblical times, weapons had.  First, let me address politicians who think that gun laws will make us safe.  I hate to burst their bubble but no law made by man has been effective at solving problems that man can create.  If laws solved all the problems there would no longer be any crime because criminals would be locked up for life and law abiding citizens could move about at will with no fear of harm…any kind of harm.  What is the real purpose of some of the laws we see being passed?  Since they don’t really solve a problem, then what?

Satan then appears as the Angel of Light to enlighten us.  If there were no guns, there would be peace.  The Second Amendment does not give citizens the right to keep and bear arms, but only allows for the states to keep a militia.  Individuals do not need guns for protection; it is the role of local and federal government to protect the people through law enforcement agencies and the military.  Sounds like a very compassionate and understanding position.  What is the real goal though?  Prevent innocent people from defending themselves against crimes like robbery, rape, and murder; prevent people from defending against a tyrannical government; prevent a Christian country from defending against enemies?  But what does the Bible say…and you probably won’t hear this very often from many of today’s pulpits…?  “Then He said to them, ‘but now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.'”  [Luke 22:36].

The Second Amendment was ratified by Congress in 1791 and is one of 10 amendments that form the Bill of Rights.  The text of the Second Amendment reads: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”  The debate over time has been, what is the meaning of the Second Amendment as to militias?  Does it mean that only militias can bear arms and citizens are deprived of doing so?  Of course in the founding days the militias were the people of each town and berg.  The Second Amendment is quite clear on any citizen restrictions.  It says, “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”  Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers who was on scene, said, “The Constitution shall never be construed…to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.”  It has been the agenda of the liberal platform to limit or end the right to bear arms.

A previous liberal president said, “I don’t believe people should be able to own guns.”  A previous liberal presidential candidate went further, “The Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment.  And I am going to make that case every chance I get.”  A liberal California senator said, “Banning guns addresses a fundamental right of all Americans to feel safe.”  The next time your home is invaded be sure to call law enforcement.  They will get there in time to clean up the mess and ‘investigate’.  There are three basic reasons for the Second Amendment:

–   To protect against foreign invaders.

–   To protect you from a tyrannical government.  (One of the first things a dictator will do is disarm the public)

–   To protect your family and personal property from criminals.

Contrary to some liberal beliefs, the NRA did not establish the Second Amendment.  The Second Amendment is the result of the Revolutionary War.  In 1776, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the original thirteen colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.  That did not mean, though, that the colonies were free. War broke out in North America. Men of the colonies banded together with their guns to protect their families, property, and the colonies against invasion.  This fighting back led to the defeat of Great Britain.  Some day in the future such an invasion could happen again and citizens must be prepared.

It is part of the liberal platform to limit or ban guns.  This is something their platform has in common with dictators of the world…Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, just to name a few.  A well known dictator that the United States was once compelled to work with during WW II once said, “If the opposition (citizen) disarms, well and good.  If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves.” [Joseph Stalin].

The police and military cannot be everywhere to protect citizens.  Citizens need to have the ability to protect themselves against criminals and evil.  Because something is illegal, does not mean it is going to be removed from society.  If guns were outlawed, only law enforcement and criminals would possess guns.  Innocent law-abiding persons would be left defenseless.  Law enforcement would be left to investigate your demise.  France has an almost complete ban on guns in society.  In a concert in 2015 terrorists killed 89 people as not a single attendee was armed and able to fight back.  In England where firearms are tightly controlled, in 2018 a record number of murders were committed with knives as well as guns.  Do we outlaw anything that can inflict harm…butcher knives, hammers, hardback books, chain saws, 2 by 4’s, pitch forks…etc?  Guns don’t kill.  People with no respect for life or God kill.

The liberal argument is that people are accidentally killed by guns.  That is sad but true.  Unfortunately it is not possible to prevent all accidental deaths.  More that 40,000 people die in automobile accidents each year in America.  The number killed by accidental gun related deaths is dwarfed by this number.  If liberal logic is applied in their desire to remove guns, then automobiles would have to be outlawed.

This may not be a subject to be approached from the pulpit but the logic can certainly be addressed in other applications.  This is not a subject, however, totally divorced from the church and the pulpit.  We will see how the ‘angel of light’ will try to twist the Word of God when it comes to self defense.  It always amazes me as to how the Hollywood elite will talk about removal of guns from citizens while surrounded by armed security.  Do I detect ‘hypocrisy’?
