Politics and the Church – Extrication From the Shoal Waters [Part 14]

We will now start to take a look at the moral decay of our nation that in many cases has been encouraged by our government and ‘tolerated’ by some of our churches in the name of ‘love’.  But first let’s take a look at how our Founding Fathers approached the obligations of ‘moral law’.  The Moral Law of the Scriptures as set forth by God Himself became the basis of what the western world, or Christendom, called the Common Law, which was incorporated into the U.S. Constitution in the Seventh Amendment.  As signer of the Constitution John Witherspoon affirmed: The Ten Commandments…are the sum of the Moral Law [John Witherspoon, The Works of the Rev. John Witherspoon, Philadelphia: William Woodward, 1802, Vol.II, pg. 485].  The Moral Law is openly acknowledged in the Declaration of Independence as “the laws of nature and of nature’s God”.  William Blackstone, the second most-invoked political authority during the Founding Era explained the two phrases, “the laws of nature” and the “laws of nature’s God”…i.e. “the law of revelation”: Man, considered as a creature, must necessarily be subject to the laws of his Creator, for he is entirely a dependent being…it is necessary that he should in all points conform to his Maker’s will.  This will of his Maker is called the law of nature.  This law of nature, being coeval with mankind and dictated by God Himself, is of course superior in obligation to any other…no human laws are of any validity if contrary to this….The doctrines thus delivered we called the revealed of Divine law and they are to be found only in the Holy Scriptures…Upon these two foundations, the law of nature and the law of revelation, depend all human laws; no human laws should be suffered to contradict these [Sir William Blackstone, Commentaries on the Laws of England, Philadelphia: Robert Bell, Union Library, 1771, Vol. I pgs. 39, 41-42].  John Locke, the third most-cited political authority in the Founding Era wrote further : The law of nature stands as an eternal rule to all men…The rules that they (legislators) make for other men’s actions must…be conformable to the law of nature, i.e. to the will of God [John Locke, Two Treatises of Government, London, A. Millar, 1764, Book II, pg. 316].  Human laws must be made according to the general laws of nature and without contradiction to any positive law of scripture, otherwise they are ill made [ Ibid].  Romans 1:19-20 and Psalm 19:1-4 each affirm that God reveals himself through what He has made in nature and also what appears in His written Word.  Significantly, these two revelations always agree with and never contradict each other.  Of course if one does not believe in God, this is all meaningless.

Now consider homosexual  behavior.  The Bible explicitly condemns it [Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:18, 26-28; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:9-10; Jude 1:6-7].  While occasions of homosexuality do exist in nature, they are always aberrations rather than the norm.  Homosexuality is a violation of “the laws of nature and of nature’s God”…a violation of God’s Moral Law.  Biblical morality aside, the scientific evidence on this subject is also unequivocal.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibit men who have sex with other men (MSM) from donating blood.  MSM have an HIV prevalence…60 times higher than the general population, 800 times higher than first time blood donors, and 8,000 times higher than repeat blood donors.  They also have an increased risk of having other infections that can be transmitted to others by blood transfusion…Hepatitis B virus is five to six times more common and the Hepatitis C virus is about two times more common [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “HIV Among Gay and Bisexual Men: Fact Sheet].  Further, though homosexuals comprise less than 4% of the population [Frank Newport, “LGBT Americans Continue to Skew Democratic and Liberal”, Gallup Politics, July 30, 2014], they account for 63% of all syphilis cases [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Gay and Bisexual Men’s Health: Sexually Transmitted Diseases”].  Statistics show that HIV/AIDS is almost exclusively a homosexual disease.  When it was originally identified in 1982 by CDC  it was named GRID (gay-related immunodeficiency). When it subsequently spread into the heterosexual community through transfusions of infected blood that had been donated by homosexuals and by women having sex with bisexual men who had previously had sex with other men, the name of the disease was changed to AIDS [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “HIV Among Gay and Bisexual Men”, March 2014].

Clearly there is a conspiracy of silence about these types of scientific facts in the media, education, and political arenas.  There are substantive economic consequences.  In 2014 alone the White House budget designated $29.7 billion to deal with the consequences of the “gay disease”…this does not include state and local expenditures [The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, “US Federal Funding for HIV/AIDS: The President’s FY 2014 Budget Request”, May 23, 2013].  The lifetime medical treatment cost just for the new cases diagnosed annually is projected at $16.6 billion [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “HIV/AIDS: HIV Cost Effectiveness”].  $12.5 billion of the taxpayer-funded Medicare and Medicaid expenses this year was for HIV/AIDS [AIDS.gov, “How We’re Spending”].  The average expense for an HIV/AIDS patient is much higher than for other patients, including even seniors, who are often represented as being the biggest economic drain on such programs.

Despite our culture’s attempt to normalize what God has declared unnatural, this is not a ‘gray’ area.  The Bible declares to be sin: lying, stealing, idolatry, gluttony, dishonoring your parents, murdering, etc. Whether you acknowledge that homosexuality is indeed sinful or not, the unavoidable reality is that there is a horrible harvest of consequences that come from it.  We are all sinners of one nature or another.  God gave those who are repentant of sin the gift of forgiveness.  Those who have received forgiveness regret their failures, ask God for strength to avoid sin, and move on to try to live a righteous life.  They do not try to convince others that their sin is really OK and normal and then ask those around them to celebrate their sin.  Unfortunately some churches and ‘christians’ have fallen into the trap.  It is up to God’s churches to continually inform the congregations as to just what sin is so that ‘good people’ don’t get led off the ‘path’. Our government has much guilt in this area of society and certainly many of our leaders need to re-study the Christian principles our Founders relied on in building this nation.

Next week we will take a look at homosexual marriage…another government failure that has kept our “ship of state” in “shoal waters”.

Comment for thought : Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a martyr for Christ during World War II, wisely observed, “Silence in the face of evil is evil itself; God will not hold us guiltless.  Not to speak is to speak.  Not to act is to act.”
