Politics and the Church – The Church and the Liberal / Progressive / Communist Threat [Part 71]

One of the best ways to destroy the United States is to undermine the foundation principles we have all been introduced to in our lifetimes.  This week we will look at some of those efforts so that you might evaluate the degree of success the communists have had.

>   Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion.  Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a ‘religious crutch’.  With personal conduct now reduced to ‘whatever feels good, do it…responsibly’, the acceptance of worship and obedience to a Supreme Being and striving to live the highest moral standards in one’s personal life have been pushed aside. Recent examples of religious enlightenment being replaced by social indoctrination.  Such an effort is in the embodiment of Jeremiah Wright, the expounder of inflammatory rhetoric…and the pastor of President Obama’s church.  Such pseudo-church organizations are serving more as community activist organizations or service centers than communities engaged in the worship of God.  Traditional churches, originally organized as places for self-renewal and improvement, are being diluted into social clubs.  The Bible has been reduced to an object of historical examination or as a rudimentary collection of ‘tall tales’ rather than the Word of God.  The world is suffering accordingly.

>   Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the grounds that it violates the principle of ‘separation of church and state’.  In 1960, Madalyn Murray O’Hair sued her school over forcing prayer and Bible study on her son, William.  In 1963, the Supreme Court upheld her position, and prayer and Bible-reading were banished from all public schools in America.  Not to let an opportunity go, Bible reading and prayer have been sought out and attacked in a multitude of ways, including challenging the display of the Ten Commandments on public facilities, prayers at town council meetings, and Christmas decorations displayed in public buildings.  The trend that followed has slowly moved the nation away from religion and the worship of God.  At least 32 percent of all US adults under age 30 have no religious affiliation.  Since 1990, that number has more than doubled.  73 percent of the religiously unaffiliated support gay marriage, and 72 percent of that same group support legalized abortion.  Just two more steppingstones leading toward the erasure of Western culture. (Pew Research Center, Religion & Public Life, “Nones” on the Rise”, October 9, 2012).  And now back to Madalyn O’Hair.  Her son, William, publicly rejected his mother’s crusade.  By 1980 he had become a Baptist minister and social conservative.  Upon hearing of William’s conversion to Christianity, O’Hair said,” One could call this a postnatal abortion…I repudiate him entirely and completely for now and all times.  He is beyond human forgiveness.”  But this is not the end of the story.  For Ms. O’Hair, her ending was brutal.  She amassed millions of dollars for her anti-religion crusade but never got to spend it.  In 1995 she was murdered by a fellow atheist, then dismembered, burned, and buried on a small plot in Texas.

>   Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hinderance to cooperation between nations on a world-wide basis.  Nearly all progressive politicians declare the Constitution ‘a living document’ that must change with the times.  By that they mean it must be allowed to evolve and remain changeable like a mound of soft clay that can be sculpted to anything the majority party wants.  Never to be addressed in this argument is ‘Which rights protected by the Constitution are now old fashioned?  Property? Speech? Self-defense? Contracts? Representation? The right to vote politicians into and out of office? Association with whomever we please? Free will? The freedom to try, buy, sell and fail?  Which of these is now out of date?  What about the constitutional structure of the government?  All changes that have come from this effort to re-mold the Constitution have shifted political power away from the people and into the fists of their eloquent and ‘highly intelligent’ political leaders.  There is a way to change the Constitution but ‘tyranny’ ain’t it.

>   Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the ‘common man’.  This idea began with a book by Charles A. Beard in 1913, An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States. In the 1950’s historians punched holes in this assessment, and by the 1960’s, Beard’s Progressive framing of the Constitution had been refuted by the historical profession. (Peter Novick, That Noble Dream, 1988, p.336).  Today, the Founders are seldom discussed in school and in many instances their portraits have been replaced with those of radical reformers.  A key tenet of socialism is to destroy the memory of the constructive participants of the past to justify the imposition of an elitist class of rulers who ‘know better’ how to rule the people in the future.

>   Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of ‘the big picture’.  Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.  Much of that belittlement took place in public schools.  In 2004, for example, a world history textbook, History Alive! The Medieval World and Beyond, was adopted for 7th graders.  Upon reviewing its content, parents became angry and complained that it was an indoctrination tool for Islam.  Chapters 8 and 9 in particular taught Islamic prayer, religion, and culture in great depth and detail. In contrast, Jesus, the leader of the world’s largest religion with more than two billion followers, is mentioned only twice.  The other major world religions were given only a paragraph of explanation.  One California parent, Jim Self of Lodi, commented,”They want to take the Ten Commandments off the steps of the Supreme Court, but teach my son how to pray to Allah?! Another parent complained that the textbook pushed Judaism and Christianity aside as ‘unworthy of consideration’ in a discussion of world religions.  Under parental pressure some school districts removed the textbook…but not all.  Even more recently, in a county outside of DC, parents complained about CRT and sexual perversion being taught in school, and they were declared ‘domestic terrorists’. Some schools, businesses, and gated communities ban the flying of the American flag even on the Fourth of July.  Some schools along the southern border fly the Mexican flag on the same pole as the American flag to acknowledge the majority nationality on their campuses.  During the holidays, employees in some quarters are forbidden to greet customers with ‘Merry Christmas’ and are

told to use ‘Happy Holidays’ so as not to offend non-Christians. (As a Christian, I am offended!)  Reference to American ‘exceptionalism’ once carried a sense of pride with an invitation to enjoy, protect, and share its unique formula for freedom and liberty.  Now it is viewed as a shameful display of presumptive arrogance and excessive bias against other nations.  Combined, these are contributing factors to weaken the people so they may be more easily controlled.  This liberal/progressive/communist goal presents evidence that it is well underway to being accomplished.

>   Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture…education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.  For decades the government’s various regulatory agencies have been setting new rules that carry the weight of law.  The Constitution forbade this.  It made a clear distinction between the three branches of government, and stated in no uncertain terms,” All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in Congress…which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives.  (US Constitution, Article I, Section I). The Constitution does not grant Congress the power to delegate those legislative powers to the Executive branch, or to anyone else. As stated by John Locke, “The legislative cannot transfer the power of making laws to any other hands, for it being but a delegated power from the people, they who have it cannot pass it to others.” (John Locke, Two Treatises of Civil Government, II, p.141). Yet, this is what is happening today!  The accomplishment of this goal is deeply entrenched in almost every layer, aspect, and operation of the federal government today!

Even with the failures of communism around the world, we can see today that efforts by Communist supporters have not slowed down.  We can see their efforts in nearly every event of significance that is impacting society.  Next week we will look at how these efforts are being exercised in various phases of civic life.  This is not something that the church can ignore or else one day, in this land that has enjoyed religious freedom, we will find its past in history books and Christians meeting in secret.  I may be wrong about the history books…that may be just another history that will not be allowed in print.
