Politics and the Church – Where’s the Church? [Part 23]

Well, after all these weeks and months of “Politics and the Church”, do you still believe that the church can separate itself from politics?  Well, that may be so in your eyes but I can pretty much assure you that politics does not have the same belief.  When ever laws are made that require Christians to ignore God’s Word or else, that’s politics right in the middle of church and when the government tries to undermine the morals we and our children are taught in church and through the Bible, that’s ‘politics’.  Next we will see how at the top level of government…politics…Christian taught morals are being challenged.

I’m old school.  When I was a child, God made only two genders: male and female…boys and girls.  Boys were ‘snakes and snails and puppy dog tails’.  Girls were ‘sugar and spice and everything nice’.  But this is the twenty-first century and I guess God has modified His production process or so the LGBTQ community would want us to believe.  Of all the problems our nation has challenging us, ‘transgenderism’ is now in the mix with activists pulling out all stops.  A reader who asked not to be identified told Todd Starnes that he as an executive for a publishing company, that provided storybooks to grade schools, was alarmed at the number of books being produced for children under the age of seven that had to do with the LGBTQ agenda. [Todd Starnes,”The Deplorables Guide to Making America Great Again”, FrontLine Publishing, 2017, pg. 121].  At Mitchell Primary School in Kittery, Maine, teachers recently read a story about transgenderism to a bunch of five year olds.  Parents were never told about the nature of the story. [Jesse Scardina,”Kittery School Put on Defensive About Transgender Lesson”, GateHouse Media, April 17, 2015].  Just another example of a school district circumventing the rights and preferences of moms and dads. In what world do people think it’s OK for teachers to discuss transgenderism with a bunch of children?  Maybe the teachers wouldn’t need so much of a pay raise if they just stuck with just teaching reading and writing.  Remember school board members are selected by elections…that’s politics.  Back when I was in first grade in the hills of Virginia…Narrows…we read nursery rhymes about Jack and Jill going up the hill to fetch a pail of water and the ‘rub-a-dub’ story.  Today, when Jack comes down, he’s wearing Jill’s dress…who knows what she is wearing…and he is going by the name of Jackie.  And who knows what the three men in a tub are doing?

Then in 2016 the administration of our best ever president…just ask him…dropped a cultural atomic bomb by declaring that forcing people to use the bathroom facilities based on their God-given plumbing was state-sponsored discrimination. [“Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch Delivers Remarks at Press Conference Announcing Complaint Against the State of North Carolina to Stop Discrimination Against Transgender Individuals”, US Department of Justice, May 9, 2016]. Four days later the administration issued a directive requiring every public school in the nation to accommodate transgender students under Title IX guidelines. [US Department of Education and Justice Release Joint Guidance to Help Schools Ensure the Civil Rights of Transgender Students”, US Department of Education, May 13, 2016 accessed December 19, 2016].  Under these guidelines boys who identify as girls and vice versa must be allowed to use the bathrooms, locker rooms, and shower stalls of their choosing.  Additionally, they must also be allowed to play on the sports teams of their choosing.  School districts that dare defy the administration’s directives could face lawsuits and lose millions of dollars in federal funding…that’s yours’ and my tax dollars.  Would your church approve of such a setup?  That’s politics!  Further, “there’s no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex”, former Attorney General Lynch went on to say. [Ibid].

Southern Baptist Convention President Ron Floyd said,”It’s an outrageous attack on our Creator Himself, upon human sexuality and morality, and a further advancement of the flagrant attack on religious freedom in our culture.  Sooner or later we have to determine that enough is enough.  It’s not going to change until Christians get involved in this battle.”  [Ron Floyd in communication with Todd Starnes, May 2016].  Even candidate Donald Trump had a problem getting the situation straight in his mind.  While on Fox and Friends he was asked if boys should use the boy’s bathroom?  His response,”Right now I just don’t have an opinion.  I would like the states to make that decision.” [Fox and Friends, May 13, 2016].  As President Trump, I believe he has made the decision in the favor of the church.  I know I have and I’m not even a state.  Texas governor Greg Abbott vowed to fight the government administration’s decree.  “‘The President’ is turning bathrooms into courtrooms. Our country is in crisis and Texas must lead the way forward.” [Noelle Walker,”Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick Speaks Out on President’s Transgender Bathroom Directive”, NBCUniversal Media, LLC, May 12, 2016].  Sometimes support comes from the most unexpected places and in this case the help came from a politician who was not afraid to speak out.  Tennessee congresswoman Diane Black in a forceful rebuke said,”I believe the Obama administration is now directly responsible for endangering our students.  It is worth noting that this directive does not carry the force of law and I would encourage Tennessee school officials to continue following their consciences.” [“Rep. Black Blasts Obama Administrative Directive on School Bathrooms”, Black.House.gov, May 13, 2016].  Family Research Council President said the decree should be “resisted with every legal and moral instrument we have available to us in this country”. [Tony Perkins in communication with Todd Starnes, May 2016].  “Every parent, every school board in America should absolutely refuse to sacrifice the safety of their children for the threat of taking away nine federal pennies that make up every educational dollar.” [Ibid].  Penny Young Nance, president of Concerned Women for America further commented,”The left always uses children to accomplish its goals of social engineering.  The adults closest to these children should decide what’s best for all children in the school.  Safety and kindness should be the guiding principles, not threats from the bullies in Washington.” [Janae Stracke,”Supreme Court Stays Ruling Enforcing Schools to Allow Transgender Students to Use the Bathroom of Their Choice”, CWALAC, August 3, 2016].

The time has come for all Americans to stand up and defy this immoral agenda.  We should not betray what we know to be true for the government’s ‘thirty pieces of silver’.  For far too long American pulpits have remained silent on controversial cultural issues.  Preachers don’t want to rock the boat.  Parishioners don’t want to cause trouble.  They want to keep their good reputation in the community.  As I have indicated previously, we are citizens both of the kingdom of Heaven and of the world.  I am sure that most Christian churches pray for guidance and help from God on some of these most perplexing problems, but many want to leave it at that.  They want to keep their good reputation in the world and let God be concerned with their reputation in the kingdom.  Such an attitude is no way Biblical.  Many times God’s answer to prayer was to empower man to take a stand for himself with God’s guidance and strength.  But now the country stands on the edge of a great moral abyss.  And we must ask ourselves: Do we defy our leaders and save the nation, or do we keep peace and sacrifice our children?  Where do you and your church stand on this contention?

Next week we will look at some more events throughout this nation that illustrate the secular, god-hating agenda that is being pushed on our society by liberal, ‘progressives’ and their ‘cronies’ in government.
